How do I install VS Code to start writing code?

The steps

    Open your web browser and navigate to code.visualstudio.com. The official Visual Studio Code website opens with a large blue download button.

    What is VS Code?

    VS Code (Visual Studio Code) is a free, modern code editor made by Microsoft. It helps you write, edit, and organize code in almost any programming language with helpful color highlighting.

    Click the blue button that says Download for Windows. The installer file (named VSCodeUserSetup.exe) starts downloading to your computer.

    When the download finishes, open the downloaded file from your browser or your Downloads folder. The installation setup window appears asking you to accept the license agreement.

    Select I accept the agreement, click Next, check the boxes for Add 'Open with Code' action, and click Install. A green progress bar fills as the editor files are installed on your computer.

    Click Finish when setup completes. Visual Studio Code launches immediately, showing the dark Welcome screen.

  6. It looks different on my screen

    If Windows SmartScreen shows a blue warning saying "Windows protected your PC", click More info and then click Run anyway.
