The steps
- 1
Open your web browser and navigate to code.visualstudio.com. The official Visual Studio Code website opens with a large blue download button.
What is VS Code?
VS Code (Visual Studio Code) is a free, modern code editor made by Microsoft. It helps you write, edit, and organize code in almost any programming language with helpful color highlighting.
- 2
Click the blue button that says Download for Windows. The installer file (named VSCodeUserSetup.exe) starts downloading to your computer.

- 3
When the download finishes, open the downloaded file from your browser or your Downloads folder. The installation setup window appears asking you to accept the license agreement.
- 4
Select I accept the agreement, click Next, check the boxes for Add 'Open with Code' action, and click Install. A green progress bar fills as the editor files are installed on your computer.

- 5
Click Finish when setup completes. Visual Studio Code launches immediately, showing the dark Welcome screen.
