The steps

  1. 1

Open your web browser and navigate to python.org/downloads. The official Python website opens showing a large yellow button with the latest version number.

    What is Python?

Python is a popular, easy-to-read programming language used for building web apps, automating tasks, and data science.

  2. 2

Click the yellow Download Python button. The installer executable (python-3.x.x-amd64.exe) downloads to your computer.

The Python downloads page showing the Download Python yellow button.
  3. 3

Open the downloaded installer file. The Python installation wizard opens.

  4. 4

Check the box at the bottom that says Add python.exe to PATH, then click Install Now. The setup progresses and installs Python and its package manager (pip) onto your system.

The Python installer window with the Add python.exe to PATH checkbox checked at the bottom.
Why is checking 'Add to PATH' so important?

Checking this box allows Windows and your terminal to find and run Python from any folder on your computer without showing a "command not recognized" error.

  5. 5

When the setup screen says Setup was successful, click Close. The installer closes and Python is ready to use.

  6. It looks different on my screen

You can also install Python directly from the built-in Microsoft Store on Windows by searching for Python 3.12 and clicking Get.
