The steps
- 1
Open the program, browser tab, or document you want to record. The window you want to capture is active on your screen.
Where does this screen recorder come from?
Windows has a built-in screen capture system called Xbox Game Bar. Despite its name, it works for recording any regular program, browser window, or tutorial without needing to install extra software.
- 2
Hold the Win and Alt keys together, then press the letter R. A small floating recording widget appears in the upper right corner of your screen showing a red dot and a timer counting up seconds.

When you are finished, press WinAltR again (or click the square blue stop button on the floating timer bar). The timer bar disappears, and a notification banner pops up saying: Game clip recorded.
