The steps

  1. 1

Hold the Win key and press I to open Settings. The Windows Settings window opens.

  2. 2

Click Accounts in the left sidebar, then click Sign-in options. A list of sign-in methods appears, including PIN (Windows Hello) and Password.

What is the difference between a PIN and a Password?

A PIN is stored only on this specific physical computer chip and never sent over the internet, making it both faster and safer against online password leaks. A password is tied to your Microsoft online account.

  3. 3

Click on the method you currently use to unlock your PC (either PIN (Windows Hello) or Password). The section expands downward to reveal a Change button.

  4. 4

Click Change (or Change your PIN). A secure dialog box appears asking you to type your current PIN or password first.

  5. 5

Enter your old PIN or password, type your new one twice to confirm, and click OK. The dialog box closes. Your new credentials take effect immediately the next time you turn on or unlock your computer.

  6. It looks different on my screen

If you use a Microsoft account (such as an @outlook.com or @hotmail.com email) rather than a local account, clicking Change on Password will open a secure Microsoft identity verification window where you may receive a confirmation code on your phone or recovery email.
