The steps

  1. 1

Click the Start button or press the Windows key, then type Windows Security and press Enter. The Windows Security home screen opens with a list of protection areas.

Do I need to buy a separate antivirus?

Windows comes with Windows Security (built-in Microsoft Defender) permanently included for free. It automatically updates and guards your computer in real time without extra software.

  2. 2

Look at the icon next to Virus & threat protection. A green checkmark badge indicates your real-time antivirus protection is actively running with no known threats.

  3. 3

Click on Virus & threat protection to open its detailed page. You see the date and time of the last scan, the total number of files scanned, and a Quick scan button.

  4. 4

Click the Quick scan button if you want to inspect your computer right now. A progress bar advances as files are scanned, finishing with a report saying "No current threats" or displaying recommended actions.

  5. It looks different on my screen

If you have installed third-party security software (such as Norton, Bitdefender, or McAfee), Windows Security will indicate that your external antivirus is active and managing your protection.
