The steps

  1. 1

Look at the tab bar along the very top of your web browser window (such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge). All your currently opened tabs are lined up across the top of the window.

  2. 2

Scan the tabs for a small speaker symbol (🔊) appearing next to a website's title. One specific tab has a tiny vibrating speaker icon, showing that it is the exact page playing audio or video.

A browser tab displaying the active speaker symbol indicating sound playback.

Why do some websites play sound on their own?

Many news websites, social media feeds, and advertising banners include auto-playing videos. As soon as the page finishes loading in the background, their sound begins playing without asking you.

  3. 3

Right-click directly on the tab displaying the speaker symbol, then click Mute site (or Mute tab). A strike-through line appears across the speaker symbol (🔇) and all sound stops immediately.

Right-click context menu on a tab showing the Mute site option.

  4. It looks different on my screen

If you do not see a speaker icon on any tab but music or talking is still coming from your computer, an app outside your browser may be responsible. Press WinCtrlV to open the Windows Volume Mixer and see every program currently producing audio.
