The steps

  1. 1

Right-click on an empty space on your desktop with no icons. A grey options menu appears at your mouse pointer.

Why does a screen become blurry or stretched?

A screen looks stretched when Windows is set to a resolution that does not match the physical grid of pixels on your monitor. Matching the recommended resolution restores razor-sharp text and correct proportions.

  2. 2

Click Display settings. The Display settings window opens showing your monitor arrangement.

Desktop right-click menu with Display settings option highlighted.
  3. 3

Scroll down to the Scale & layout section and find Display resolution. A dropdown box displays the currently selected pixel resolution.

  4. 4

Click the dropdown menu and select the resolution labeled (Recommended). Your screen blinks black for a moment, then reappears with sharp, proportional text and icons.

Display resolution dropdown open showing the Recommended resolution selected.
  5. 5

A prompt asks if you want to keep these display settings. Click Keep changes. The clear display settings are saved permanently.

  6. It looks different on my screen

If the resolution dropdown is greyed out, your computer may need to reload its display card. Try restarting your graphics driver by pressing WinCtrlShiftB.
