The steps

   Check your headset or microphone cable, and make sure any physical mute slider or switch on the wire is turned off. The cable is securely plugged into your computer jack, and no red mute indicator is showing on your headset.

   Why do microphones stop picking up sound?

   Microphones usually fail because Windows is listening to the wrong input device (such as an internal laptop mic instead of your plug-in headset), or because Windows privacy settings block microphone access.

   Press Win+I on your keyboard, click System, and click Sound. The Sound settings page opens showing your audio hardware.

   Scroll down to the Input section and click on the microphone you are trying to use. The microphone is selected as your default audio input device.

   Speak normally while looking at the Test your microphone bar. A blue line bounces back and forth with your voice, confirming Windows is receiving audio.

   If the bar does not move at all, click Privacy & security in the left menu, click Microphone, and switch Microphone access to On. The toggle turns blue, allowing apps like Zoom, Teams, and your browser to access your voice.

In Windows 10, open Settings, click Privacy, choose Microphone on the left, and ensure Allow apps to access your microphone is toggled On.
